Dear Friends and Family,

I am blogging to inform people about a community service project that I will be a part of this summer in Uganda, Africa. As many of you know, I am currently perusing my master’s degree in social work. I along with nine other students have been hand selected to spend a semester researching the various aspects of Uganda’s population. After the semester, students will travel to Uganda with a community member to provide services to the people of Uganda.

This opportunity is one that will shape my clinical skills in a number of ways. As many of you know, HIV and AIDS is an epidemic in Africa. Therefore, it is a population that will appreciate and surely benefit from the services that will be provided to them. One of the services we will be providing is working with child-headed families. Since many parents have passed away due to AIDS, children have taken on the responsibility of being a primary caregiver. Not only will we be working with the families, but also we will be providing education in school systems and working with agencies around HIV prevention. Lastly, we will talk with the policy makers of Uganda and try to impact the country on a more macro level. This is an opportunity to see social work from its roots and to provide services on all levels.

During these tough economic times all of us are on a tight budget. Unfortunately, this circumstance has found me at inopportune time. However, the children of Uganda face circumstances you and I cant imagine on a daily basis. My hope is to attempt to make an impact with the help of others who are more fortunate. If you can find the means to sponsor my ambition any donation would be greatly appreciated.
